Pune: MSRTC’s Swargate Depot Redevelopment To Begin On January 15

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is set to commence the first phase of redevelopment of its Swargate depot in Pune on January 15. The project, which aims to improve the condition of the depot, includes concrete resurfacing and enhancement of vehicle bays.
According to Divisional Controller of MSRTC Pune, the work is expected to be completed by April. However, the redevelopment process may lead to rescheduling of some buses, causing inconvenience to commuters. “We will start with work near the exit gate first and then take up some of the bus bays,” he added.
The redevelopment project aims to address the long-standing issues of potholes and waterlogging at the depot, which have plagued commuters for years. The concrete resurfacing and elevation of the road surface will ensure a smoother and safer experience for passengers.
The project was initially scheduled to begin in December but was delayed due to the peak travel season. MSRTC officials also cited the recent diversion of bus services towards the Satara-Kolhapur highway via alternative routes as a reason for the delay.
Commuters have expressed frustration over the delay in the redevelopment project. “For how long will passengers have to bear the brunt? If they said that work would begin right after the monsoons, it should have been done,” said a frequent commuter.
Despite the delays, MSRTC officials have assured that the coming year will see significant improvements. Plans are underway to upgrade the condition of the toilets and the building, as well as install e-bus charging points.
The Swargate depot, which has been operational since 1961, is one of the busiest in the state, recording over 50,000 passengers daily. The redevelopment project is a much-needed overhaul of the facility, which has been plagued by overcrowding, disorganization, and unclean premises.
