Pune, January 20, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing a challenge in recovering ₹3,500 crore in property tax arrears owed by mobile tower companies. In August, the state government directed the PMC not to forcibly collect these dues, creating a dilemma for the municipal administration on how to recover the amount.
To find a solution, the PMC is planning to approach the state’s Chief Secretary for guidance. Due to the city’s expansion and the need for significant funds for development projects, the municipality is increasingly concerned about the growing property tax arrears from mobile companies.
The tax disputes between the PMC and mobile tower companies have been ongoing for years, with a legal case pending in court. The state government’s directive has complicated the situation further, especially with the approaching deadline for the financial year.
The PMC’s budget for the current fiscal year (2024-25) allocated ₹2,700 crore for property tax revenue, of which over ₹1,700 crore has already been collected. In a bid to meet the target, the municipal corporation is also considering auctioning off seized properties. The growing arrears, which have reached ₹3,500 crore, are a result of several years of unpaid taxes by mobile companies.
The PMC plans to continue pressing the state government for a resolution on how to proceed with the recovery.
