Pune: In response to the rising cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to strengthen security measures around the city’s water tanks. The civic body has approved a budget of ₹35 crore to build boundary walls, security cabins, and beautify the surrounding areas of 27 key water tanks.

Residents of Sinhagad Road, Khadakwasla, Kirkatwadi, Nanded, Dhayari, and Ambegaon had previously raised concerns about contaminated water from local wells, linking it to the surge in GBS cases. In an immediate response, PMC installed iron mesh covers on wells to prevent contamination.

Currently, PMC manages 155 water tanks across the city, but nearly half lack proper security. Reports of open access to these tanks, including instances of people consuming alcohol near them, have raised safety concerns. To address this, PMC plans to construct six-foot boundary walls, security cabins, and sanitation facilities near selected tanks. Areas with open space will also undergo tree plantation efforts.

The Municipal Water Supply Department stated that a tender process will soon be initiated to implement these upgrades. The move aims to safeguard the city’s drinking water supply and ensure public health.
