Newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP from Pune, Medha Kulkarni, has joined the public outcry against the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) plan to construct a monorail-type toy train in Thorat Garden in Kothrud. Kulkarni, expressing alignment with concerned citizens, emphasized that the project lacks public demand and necessity.

Her facebook post reads,

The proposed Rs 5 crore project, spearheaded by former city mayor and BJP leader Murlidhar Mohol, includes an elevated toy train with a 400-meter track and four stations, raising objections from residents who fear environmental damage and a reduction in public space.

This opposition aligns with Kulkarni’s broader stance on environmental issues, as she had previously supported citizens and environmentalists in their protest against a link road project. Despite internal differences within the BJP, Kulkarni remains steadfast in her commitment to citizens and environmental causes, reinforcing her dedication even after being elected to the Rajya Sabha.

The protest against the monorail project gained momentum as concerned citizens, led by Shweta Yadavadkar, organized a meeting at Thorat Udyan, attracting representatives from various political parties. This united front aims to address the adverse impact of the project on the beloved park, frequented by thousands of children and citizens daily for recreational activities and exercise.

Looking forward, the municipal commissioner is expected to meet with the action committee members, marking a crucial step in addressing the growing opposition and concerns surrounding the proposed monorail project in Pune’s Thorat Garden. The outcome of this dialogue will likely shape the trajectory of the project, navigating the delicate balance between developmental initiatives and the preservation of public spaces and environmental integrity.
