Pune News: ₹8,000 Crore Yerwada To Katraj Subway Project: Detailed Report To Be Submitted To State Government
Pune: To enhance traffic movement within the city, a 20-kilometer-long subway from Yerwada to Katraj has been proposed. The estimated cost for constructing this subway is approximately ₹400 crore per kilometer, amounting to a total expenditure of ₹8,000 crore. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared and submitted to the state government for approval, as reported in Loksatta.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier instructed officials in a Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) meeting to expedite the proposal. He emphasized that the subway should be built using the “twin tunnel” technique with advanced technology to ensure efficient and safe transportation.
Speaking about the project, Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale explained, “While Pune has several roads connecting the east and west, there are limited routes connecting the north and south. The PMRDA has therefore proposed the Yerawada-Katraj subway to address this gap.”
The project will undergo a thorough site inspection and analysis, followed by the submission of a detailed report to the state government for further decision-making.
Will the Subway Materialize?
There is skepticism surrounding the project due to past announcements like the Pune-Mumbai Hyperloop and the proposed river-based water transport system, both of which remained on paper. Citizens are now questioning whether the Yerawada-Katraj subway will face a similar fate.
