Pune: A senior official from the property registration department announced on Thursday that about 2,32,000 individuals who have not paid their stamp duty from 1980 to 2020 might be eligible for penalty relief if they settle their dues within the next two months. These individuals were identified during an audit conducted by the department.

There is a significant number of defaulters from Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Nagpur. The government could gain approximately Rs 3,000 crore if the citizens participate in the amnesty scheme and make their payments within the specified period.

As per the information received, the amnesty scheme offers a penalty waiver to those who pay during the state government’s announced periods, which are December 1 to January 31, 2024, and February 1 to March 31. The evasion of stamp duty during the execution and registration of property documents by buyers has resulted in deficits. Additionally, the scheme will help individuals who previously received notices but were unable to pay the substantial amounts owed.

The official added that the scheme will prevent any further legal disputes. Individuals who have not registered their old documents due to high penalties will be able to take advantage of the scheme. Several documents, including agreements for sale and conveyance deeds, have not been stamped correctly in line with the Maharashtra Stamp Act of 1958.
