Pune: A Wagholi family learned a harsh lesson in trust when their neighbor, entrusted with watering plants during a vacation, allegedly fled with cash and valuables worth ₹23 lakh. The shocking incident occurred in October 2024 but came to light only last week.

Gaurav Adarsh Gera, a senior employee at a mobile company and resident of Abhilasha Society, lodged a complaint with Wagholi police after his wife discovered the theft. Upon their return from a post-Diwali trip in late November, the valuables remained unnoticed until recently.

Investigating officer API Vinayak Ahire stated, “The keys were handed to the neighbor for watering plants. The cupboard showed no signs of forced entry, and the locks remained intact. The suspects, who were living on rent, fled to Rajasthan, switched off their phones, and blocked the complainant’s family on other lines.”

Police are pursuing leads to locate the missing neighbors and uncover further details. The incident has sparked discussions on the risks of entrusting house keys to neighbors.
