Within the boundaries of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB), the collection of the vehicle entrance tax (VET) has been stopped from April 14 as per the recent notification issued by the ministry. The PCB received an order from the government in the form of a gazette, instructing the toll office to stop collecting tax after midnight on April 13.

VET was one of PCB’s primary sources of income, with 13 toll collection centres generating a yearly tax revenue of 13 crore rupees. Despite the fact that the Centre’s directive will result in a reduction in PCB’s income, the general public has supported the move.

The financial situation of PCB is not great, and it has been waiting for its portion of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for a long time. With the elimination of VET, the situation has become severe.

The most recent gazette notification, published on April 11, states that the previous authorization for the collection of vehicle entry tax has been revoked. Since 2001, the Pune Cantonment Board has levied a vehicle entry tax on commercial vehicles entering its territory; this is one of the organization’s main sources of income.

However, the cessation of the VET collection has benefited the residents of the cantonment. They no longer have to pay the tax, resulting in some relief from the financial burden.

The PCB is now exploring alternative sources of income to make up for the loss of revenue. The situation is developing, and further updates will follow.
