Pimpri-Chinchwad: The population of Pimpri-Chinchwad, an industrial city in India, has been steadily increasing, and with it, the number of vehicles on the road. However, this has also led to a growing concern about pollution caused by petrol and diesel vehicles. In response to this issue, the state government and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation have taken steps to encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs) as a means to combat pollution.

The tax collection and taxation department of the Municipal Corporation has initiated a scheme to promote the installation of charging stations for EVs. Property owners or housing societies who set up such charging stations are eligible for a significant rebate of 2 to 5 percent on their property tax. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh has urged the residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad to take advantage of this discount and contribute to making the city pollution-free.

The increasing population of the city is accompanied by rapid growth in all directions, leading to a surge in the number of vehicles on the roads. Currently, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Regional Transport Office (RTO) has registered a staggering 23.92 lakh (2.39 million) vehicles, while the city’s population is around 30 lakh (3 million). This clearly indicates the rising trend of vehicle ownership in the city. However, the consequent pollution caused by petrol and diesel vehicles has become a pressing concern.

To address this issue, the Urban Development Department of the state government announced the Electric Vehicle Policy on August 20, 2021, and instructed local bodies to implement it. Following this directive, the tax collection and taxation department of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, under the leadership of the then Commissioner Rajesh Patil, has implemented the policy from January 1, 2022.

Under the scheme, property owners who set up charging stations for EVs and provide charging facilities to other EV owners are eligible for a 2 percent rebate on their property tax. Housing societies that provide charging facilities to their members as part of shared facilities, such as gyms or clubhouses, are entitled to an impressive 5 percent discount on their property tax.

Additionally, housing societies that offer commercial charging services in their own premises, excluding the main parking lot, are charged at domestic rates instead of commercial rates for the designated space, as long as it does not impede emergency operations.

Furthermore, property owners who provide charging facilities to other EV owners through charging stations, as per the guidelines mentioned above, and submit the necessary documents, including an income tax no objection certificate, are eligible for a 2 percent discount on their property tax after inspection. Housing societies that provide charging facilities to their members as shared facilities, with the submission of requisite documents and an income tax no objection certificate, are eligible for a 5 percent concession on their property tax after inspection.

Apart from the property tax rebates, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation also offers a 3 percent tax concession on general tax for EV owners who register their vehicles online on the municipal corporation’s website, as stated by Ajay Charthankar, Assistant Commissioner of PCMC.

Property tax head of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Nilesh Deshmukh, said, “We will be giving tax rebate on installation of the charging stations for charging electric vehicles.”
