Pune News: Over 10,000 Vehicle Registrations on Dussehra 2024, But Electric Vehicle Sales Plummet
Dussehra brings an overall rise in vehicle registrations, yet electric vehicle sales see a sharp decline compared to last year.
Pune, October 2024 – This year’s Dussehra festival saw over 10,000 new vehicle registrations in Pune, with data from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) indicating a slight increase from last year’s numbers. From October 3 to 11, a total of 10,601 new vehicles were registered, just edging out 2023’s figure of 10,594.
The registrations included 6,707 two-wheelers, 2,922 four-wheelers, 346 goods vehicles, 261 auto-rickshaws, 20 buses, 231 taxis, and 114 other types of vehicles. Last year, these numbers comprised 6,144 two-wheelers, 3,482 four-wheelers, 219 goods vehicles, 318 auto-rickshaws, 37 buses, 309 taxis, and 85 other vehicles.
Despite the overall increase in vehicle registrations, electric vehicle (EV) sales have taken a significant hit. Only 363 EVs were registered this year, a stark drop from the 1,031 registered during Dussehra in 2023. Electric two-wheeler registrations fell from 903 last year to 309, while electric four-wheeler registrations decreased from 120 to 26. Registrations of electric goods vehicles, auto-rickshaws, and taxis also saw declines.
This drop in EV sales comes after recent remarks from Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, suggesting that subsidies for EV manufacturers may no longer be necessary as production costs have lowered. These comments have raised concerns among EV manufacturers about sustaining growth without government support.
