Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is going to renovate eight flyovers and connecting roads in the city and make it free of potholes. A budget of Rs 4 crore 20 lakhs has been finalized for the same.

The flyovers and roads which will be refurbished are Mundhwa and BT Kawade Road Railway Over Bridge, Shivaji Bridge, Mhatre Bridge, Sambhaji Bridge, SM Joshi Bridge, Dandekar Bridge and the bridge at Spicer College.

As per information, the decision comes amidst almost nil maintenance of these roads and bridges. Some of the bridges are around a hundred years old. Only patchwork and repairs have been carried out on these roads in the name of maintenance.

It is worthy to note that after the construction of a flyover or road, the responsibility for its maintenance lies with the respective developer company for the next three years. However, the defect liability period has expired for most of the bridges. Also, there are potholes on the roads connecting these bridges which has led to many accidents.

In the past few years, the amount of traffic and load has increased on Mhatre Bridge. SM Joshi Bridge has developed very minor cracks. Also, accidents and traffic jams have become a regular problem due to a large number of potholes on the railway flyover on Mundhwa and BT Kawade roads. This results in slowing down the speed of vehicles.

Hence, the PMC has decided to finally resolve all the issues for which the work will start soon.
