The CCTV cameras, which prove to be a vital help in the police investigation, are shut in the Wanowrie area for some weeks by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Prashant Jagtap, former Corporator, Wanowrie said, “PMC had undertaken a drive to remove illegal cables. But PMC’s staff also removed the cables which were linked to the CCTV installed in the area. In the recent visit of PMC Senior officials, Additional Commissioner and Electrical Dept head, I was assured that action will be taken to lay new cables. CCTV’s form an important part of the surveillance in the area and prolonged non functionality of them will result in poor redressal of crime related complaints.”

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Bhausaheb Pathare, Senior Police Inspector, Wanowrie Police Station said, “CCTV cameras play an important role in making the investigation process fast & very smooth as even we can get to know about anything illegal happening & can nab people & criminals. But, for some weeks now, all the 40 CCTV cameras linked to the Wanowrie police station are not functioning & are shut. We have sent various letters to the PMC regarding this. But there is no concrete reply yet.”

As per the information, the PMC had cut all illegal overhead wires. But, in this drive, the PMC staff also cut off the wires of CCTV cameras. Hence, 40 CCTV cameras in the Wanowrie area, which are linked to the Wanowrie police station, are not functional now.

Shrinivas Kandul, Chief Engineer, PMC Electrical Department, has assured that the PMC is surveying all the CCTV cameras & the reasons for their non-functioning. He added that the PMC will come up with a concrete solution soon.
