In a groundbreaking feat, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully linked the upcoming Mumbai Coastal Road (MCR) with the existing Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) utilizing ‘tidal waves conditions’ in the Arabian Sea, marking a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development.

The achievement was marked by the installation of a massive 136-meter-long Bow Arch String Girder, weighing around 2,000 tonnes at 3.25 a.m. This engineering marvel, witnessed by BMC officials including Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and Additional Municipal Commissioner Amit Saini, culminated after an intense effort of 85 minutes in the early hours.

The giant girder, transported on a 25,000-tonne barge from Mazagon Docks, commenced its journey on Wednesday and reached the Worli Bay by 4 am the next day. The meticulous process of setting up the girder amidst the existing tidal conditions commenced at 2 am ensuring optimal conditions for the final setup amid the sea waves and winds.

With precision and expertise, four ‘mating units’ were deployed on both the MCR and BWSL, facilitating the seamless connection of the girder at 3.25 a.m. amidst applause and cheers. Subsequently, the barge below the girder sailed off, paving the way for further infrastructure development, including asphalting and waterproofing.

Manufactured in pre-fabricated parts in Ambala, Haryana, the girder was transported to Mazagon Docks and assembled using advanced welding technology. The completion of this process heralds the commencement of cement concretization using anti-corrosive C-5 Japanese technology.

While the south-bound arm of the MCR was inaugurated in March, its connection to the sea link for onward phases till Borivali awaited completion. However, with the successful installation of the colossal girder, the MCR is poised to facilitate smooth, fast, and signal-free traffic movement, enhancing connectivity and convenience for commuters across Mumbai.
