A 50-year-old man accused in a sexual harassment case escaped from police custody on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital. The accused, Santosh Sathe, a resident of Mhasoli village in Karad, was later rearrested by Satara police the same evening.

Sathe was arrested by Karad police in connection with a sexual harassment case registered at Karad taluka police station. On Tuesday, he complained of chest pain and was admitted to Ward No. 18 of Sassoon Hospital.

According to police, Sathe took advantage of a lapse in security. “He was under Karad police security. On Wednesday morning, while the two security personnel were busy with their morning chores, he managed to escape,” said Ravindra Gaikwad, senior inspector at Bund Garden police station.

A case has now been registered at Bund Garden police station regarding his escape.

This is not the first time an accused has fled from Sassoon Hospital. In 2023, drug kingpin Lalit Patil also managed to escape while undergoing treatment. He was later arrested near Chennai.

The incident raises concerns about security lapses at Sassoon Hospital, as it continues to witness such escapes. Police have assured a detailed investigation into how Sathe managed to flee despite being under watch.
