A  software engineer from Wagholi fell prey to a sophisticated online scam, losing ₹27.5 lakh to cybercrooks. The victim, who lodged a complaint with the Wagholi police on Saturday, was duped on the pretext of earning a good income by performing online tasks.

According to the police, the techie received a text message on November 4, claiming that he could earn money by performing simple online tasks such as liking videos, visiting websites, and writing online reviews. The suspects promised him a lucrative income for working part-time.

Initially, the victim received small amounts of money for completing a few tasks, which led him to believe that the opportunity was genuine. However, the suspects soon asked him to perform prepaid tasks and shared five different bank accounts with him, asking him to transfer money with the promise of higher returns.

The techie transferred ₹27.5 lakh to these accounts, but when he tried to withdraw the promised amount, he realized that he had been cheated. The suspects demanded more money to release the payment, which raised the victim’s suspicions.

The police are investigating the matter and have advised citizens to be cautious of such online scams. “People should be wary of unsolicited messages promising easy money. They should never transfer money to unknown accounts or share their personal and financial information with strangers,” said a police official.
