Pune's Deworming Campaign Postponed Due To Technical Issues

The state public health department has postponed the deworming campaign in Pune city, citing technical problems. The campaign, which was scheduled for December 4, aimed to cover 4.50 lakh children aged one to 19 years in Pune city.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, city immunisation officer while responding to the media person stated that the campaign plan included administering albendazole tablets to the targeted children. However, due to a shortage of tablets, the campaign has been postponed. The PMC had a stock of 2.50 lakh tablets and had requested an additional 2 lakh tablets.

The state department has instructed the PMC health department to hand over the existing stock of tablets to the district health officer for use in the deworming campaign in rural Pune. The campaign was initially scheduled to be conducted across 17 districts of Maharashtra, with a mop-up round on December 10.

Dr. Nina Borade, health chief, PMC, stated  while communicating with media that officials are now trying to source medicines from Telangana for the drive in the city. “We are ready for the campaign and have completed training, line list, and Information Education and Communication (IEC) activities,” she added.

The deworming campaign aims to reduce the burden of parasitic infections, which can cause malnutrition, stunted growth, anaemia, and impaired cognitive development in children. Deworming can help prevent complications associated with worm infections, supporting overall health and development.
