Pune News: Tanker Owner Arrested For Supplying Contaminated Water To Kharadi Society
Pune, January 6, 2025: Residents of Nyati Elysia Society in Kharadi faced a health crisis after consuming contaminated water supplied by a private tanker service. The water, sourced from a sewage treatment plant (STP) meant for construction use, caused symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach aches among several residents.
The issue came to light when residents reported their concerns to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Investigations revealed that Shrinivas Ramlu Dasari, the owner of Shriram Water Suppliers, had been delivering STP water instead of potable water. The contaminated water was supplied between October 7 and December 17.
Nyati Elysia Society, home to 850 flats, relies on both municipal water and additional tanker deliveries to meet its growing needs. Shriram Water Suppliers was contracted to deliver 30-35 tankers daily. However, residents uncovered the scam by tracking tanker trucks from the STP to the society and recording video evidence.
PMC officials, including Junior Engineer Nitin Jadhav and Deputy Engineer Anwar Mulla, tested the water and confirmed the contamination. Despite holding discussions with the builder and supplier, no corrective actions were taken initially.
Following complaints, Chandannagar police arrested Dasari and his driver. A case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS) for negligence and endangering public health, said Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Chavan. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant about water quality to prevent such incidents in the future.
