Pune: OPDs To Close For 24 Hours In Nationwide Protest Over Kolkata Doctor's Murder
In Pune, private hospitals’ outpatient departments (OPDs) will remain closed from 6 AM on Saturday until 6 AM on Sunday, August 18. This closure is in response to a 24-hour strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and other medical organizations. The strike protests the recent brutal attack and murder of a female resident doctor at a medical college in Kolkata. Due to this strike, scheduled surgeries during this period have been postponed. As a result, there is a potential for significant disruption in medical services across the city. However, essential services will continue as usual, as confirmed by the IMA and supporting medical groups.
Dr. Rajan Sancheti, President of IMA’s Pune branch, stated, “All doctor organizations and corporate hospitals in the city have supported IMA’s call, leading to the closure of OPDs from Saturday morning to Sunday morning.”
The incident in Kolkata, where a female resident doctor was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College has sparked nationwide outrage. In response, resident doctors across the country have initiated an indefinite strike. This movement has received support from doctors across various medical fields.
In Pune, both government and private medical college resident doctors have been on strike for the past four days. Additionally, staff and doctors at private diagnostic centers have also joined the protest.
This widespread support has intensified the potential for service interruptions in the city and its surrounding areas over the next 24 hours.
