Sourabh Patil, an experienced and mindful trekker told Pune Pulse, “Social media has a huge contribution here as it provokes individuals to explore new places in peak monsoon and post the pictures, attracting likes…and the spot that gets most viral, is experiencing overcrowding from tourists. Visitors should prioritize their safety, suitable trekking equipment, first aid kits, and hiring a professional guide.

He further added how we must not forget that other than being touristy spots, forts are our national and historic landmarks that hold cultural significance. Hence, we must behave accordingly and make sure we don’t cause or provoke any kind of misconduct or mischief that depicts disrespect towards our ancestors. We should not consume alcoholic beverages there and spook the wild fauna in the area. And lastly, be cautious before making direct touch with the natural water bodies.

Overcrowding and weather conditions increase the risk of accidents during monsoons. The swift flow of streams, slippery rocks, floods, and intense rainfall necessitates careful navigation. Human errors can be fatal during this season, so avoiding recklessness and excess can ensure the full enjoyment of wandering.

Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangha has issued comprehensive guidelines to promote safe trekking practices which include carrying first aid supplies, travelling with established groups, and making sure you communicate with people outside the group. It’s also advised to take extra safety measures like using walking sticks, exercising caution on slick surfaces, and avoiding dangerous picture spots.
