Pune district witnessed a notable rise in air pollution over the last two days as a result of dry weather and a decrease in nighttime temperatures. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the region jumped from 75 on October 23 to a high of 133 by October 25, before slightly reducing to 123 by evening.

With an AQI of 197, the Katraj area approached the “poor” category, while several other locations, including Bhosari and the SPPU vicinity, remained in the “moderate” range.

According to SAFAR-IITM, the drop in mercury levels led to temperature inversion, trapping pollutants near the ground. The lack of wind, paired with minimal rainfall, has further aggravated pollution levels.

Upcoming Rainfall: IMD forecasts indicate a possible weather system forming around October 28, which could bring light rainfall. This rainfall could improve air quality by washing away some of the airborne pollutants.

Short-Term Impact: Until the expected rainfall arrives, the air quality is likely to remain moderate, with AQI levels between 100 and 200 in various areas. Prolonged exposure to such air could cause discomfort, especially for sensitive groups, including the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the dry spell to persist for the next two to three days, with the likelihood of light rain starting October 28, which may help alleviate air quality.

Firecracker Activity: In the lead-up to Diwali, the use of firecrackers has likely contributed to the pollution increase. Firecracker emissions release particulate matter and toxic gases, which worsen air quality, especially during stagnant weather conditions.

Low Wind Speeds: The current wind speed in Pune is around 1.9 km/hr, which is insufficient to disperse accumulated pollutants. This low wind speed contributes to pollutant concentration in certain pockets across the district.
