Pune: PMC Drainage Work Damages Power Cables, 6,500 MSEDCL Consumers Affected By Major Power Outage
Pune, May 29, 2026: A major power cut was reported in several parts of central Pune on Friday afternoon after an underground power cables connected to the Navi Peth substation were damaged during drainage work being carried out by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
According to officials, two incoming 220 KV power cables from the New Parvati substation to the 22/11 Navi Peth substation were severed at around 4:15 pm when a JCB machine was engaged in excavation work for the PMC drainage project.

Following the incident, the electricity supply from eight outgoing feeders operating from the Navi Peth substation was immediately shut down as a precautionary measure. The disruption affected major localities including SP College area, Shastri Road, Sadashiv Peth, Navi Peth, and Sane Guruji Nagar.
Officials stated that nearly 180 transformers were impacted due to the cable damage, resulting in a power outage for approximately 6,500 electricity consumers across the affected areas. Residents and commercial establishments experienced inconvenience due to the sudden interruption in supply.

The Peswe Park sub-division of the electricity department informed that repair and cable jointing work was started immediately after the incident. Technical teams are currently working on restoring the damaged lines at the earliest.
Authorities said that the restoration process may take nearly four to four-and-a-half hours to complete. Once the repair work is finished, the electricity supply in all affected areas will be restored gradually.
