A longstanding dispute between two neighbouring families, dating back to 2016, reached a critical juncture. Following a complaint about unauthorized construction, the Pune Municipal Corporation(PMC) swiftly issued a midnight notice, leading to the demolition of the house the very next morning.

In Pune, when unauthorized encroachments are taking place, action is avoided even after receiving orders from superiors. However, the police issued a notice at 12:30 midnight in a slum in Yerwada, after which the municipal team destroyed the entire house immediately in the morning.

The action of the PMC has raised eyebrows as to why the municipal corporation took a sudden decision and gave no time to the family to take out the belongings of the house.

As per the information, Parasdas Ranka’s house is in Ganesh Nagar in Yerwada. A dispute has been going on since 2016 between two neighbouring families, one of whom had lodged a complaint with the PMC due to unauthorized construction. The complainant then complained to the Human Rights Commission. In the hearing held, the Commission had ordered action against the unauthorized construction. The Yerawada regional office of PMC had issued notices to four houses here. It also included Ranka’s house.

On Tuesday (January 9) at midnight, Yerawada police issued a notice to Ranka so as not to disturb law and order and action would be taken. After that, around 10 am, the field office team started the operation. The roofs of two of Ranka’s rooms were completely demolished, damaging the household goods. But by taking action against those who had quarrels, the very intention of the PMC has been questioned.

Tulshiram Nagtilak, Assistant Commissioner of Yerwada Regional Office, said, ‘In Ganesh Nagar, since 2016, there have been complaints between neighbours. After the complainant complained to the Human Rights Commission, we took action as per the order of the Commission. Also, Ranka has filed a petition against this notice in the district court, but there was no stay on it and action was taken. Deliberately not much action has been taken on Ranka’s house.

Many houses have been constructed in the slums of the city, and some houses have two to three floors. Since citizens live here, the municipality does not take action. But in the quarrel between the neighbours, they are forced to take action by complaining to each other. It is affecting the citizens.
