The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is working on a plan to renovate its farmers’ markets to tackle the traffic congestion concerns that have been prepared. As a part of this plan, the existing markets will be closed down and new ones will open out at approximately 75 different locations across the city, according to civic officials who announced on Tuesday.

The move comes after complaints from residents, especially from areas like Katraj-Ambegaon and Bopodi, about traffic and parking issues caused by the markets. Some vendors who weren’t farmers were also found selling goods at these markets.

Under the new plan, PMC will work with the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board to set up two farmers’ markets in each ward. The markets will be held once a week on land identified by the PMC estate department, ensuring they don’t disrupt traffic flow.

Agriculture companies will also be allowed to set up stalls at the markets to help farmers sell their produce. Stall operators will need to pay a ₹100 deposit and ₹50 rent. Each market will have around 30-40 stalls, exclusively for farmers.

The new system is expected to make it easier for residents to buy fresh produce directly from farmers while reducing traffic congestion in the city.
