In a move to make commuting easier, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has announced the launch of a ‘next stop announcement system’ in all its buses. The system will be installed in the entire fleet of 1,880 PMPML buses. This initiative is aimed at helping visually impaired, disabled, and elderly passengers travel with ease.

This is the first time such a system is being introduced in PMPML buses. It will provide passengers with clear and timely information about upcoming stops. Officials say this will ensure a smoother travel experience for thousands of daily commuters in Pune.

The installation work is in its final stages. The audio recordings for each bus route are complete. The system is expected to be fully operational within a month. “It is necessary for passengers to receive loud and clear information about the next stop while travelling in a bus. The installation process is nearly complete, and it will benefit passengers,” said an official.

Public transport services in Pune, like the metro, railway stations, and the airport, already provide automated announcements. However, PMPML buses did not have this facility. This often made it hard for passengers, especially the visually impaired and elderly, to identify their stops. Many missed their stops, leading to confusion and inconvenience.

For years, visually impaired passengers have had to depend on conductors or fellow passengers for help. With this new system, they will now be able to travel more independently. Elderly commuters, who often struggle with reading route boards or recognizing stops, will also benefit.

The PMPML’s new move is part of its plan to modernize services and make public transport more inclusive. Regular passengers have welcomed the initiative.

The system will be a big relief to thousands of commuters once it is fully implemented.
