Pune, June 20, 2026: In a major step towards addressing traffic congestion and eliminating railway crossings across the Pune Metropolitan Region, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (MahaRail).

The agreement aims to facilitate the swift and high-quality construction of Railway Overbridges (ROBs) and Railway Underpasses (RUBs) within the PMRDA jurisdiction. The initiative is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and resolve several long-pending transportation challenges in the rapidly growing metropolitan region.

The move follows the directions of Maharashtra Chief Minister and PMRDA Chairman Devendra Fadnavis, who had emphasized the need to address traffic bottlenecks caused by railway crossings. During earlier review meetings, it was decided that projects such as railway overbridges, foot overbridges (FOBs), and underpasses should be executed through MahaRail, given its technical expertise in railway infrastructure development.

Following these directions, PMRDA and MahaRail held a series of discussions to transfer and implement the proposed projects. PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari had directed officials to expedite the finalization of the agreement.

The MoU was formally signed on Friday by MahaRail Managing Director Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal and PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari. PMRDA Chief Engineer (In-charge) Shivprasad Bagdi and senior officials from both organizations were present on the occasion.

Officials stated that the agreement will pave the way for making several roads in the Pune Metropolitan Region free from railway crossings. Once completed, the projects are expected to eliminate long vehicle queues at railway gates, reducing travel delays and improving commuter convenience.

The initiative is also expected to support faster regional development while helping citizens save substantial travel time and fuel, thereby enhancing overall connectivity and mobility across the Pune Metropolitan Region.
