Pune Police Ban Laser And Beam Lights Near Airport For 60 Days To Ensure Flight Safety
Pune, September 5, 2025: The Pune City Police have issued prohibitory orders restricting the use of high-intensity beam and laser lights in the vicinity of Lohegaon Airport for the next 60 days. The restriction comes under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Jt.CP) Ranjan Kumar Sharma explained that both civil and defence aircraft, including helicopters, operate at all hours from the Lohegaon airbase and Pune airport. During nighttime operations, pilots rely heavily on runway and Air Traffic Control (ATC) signals for safe navigation.
However, recent reports from the Indian Air Force revealed that during events in Pune, laser and beam lights have been projected skyward, creating glare and distractions that pose a serious safety risk to pilots.
The police emphasized that such lights within a 15-kilometre radius of the airport could compromise aviation safety and potentially lead to accidents. To prevent such incidents, the use of powerful laser or beam lights directed into the sky has been prohibited from September 7, 2025, for a period of two months.
Authorities have further warned that any violation of this order will invite strict legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
