Pune, Nov 23: In a major breakthrough, Pune Police have uncovered a large illegal arms manufacturing and supply network operating out of Barwani district in Madhya Pradesh, leading to the detention of 36 individuals and the seizure of a significant stock of weapons, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The crackdown was launched in Umarti village—around 500 km from Pune—after city police recovered multiple pistols over the past three weeks. Investigations revealed that the weapons were being sourced from Madhya Pradesh, prompting a coordinated action with MP Police.

During the joint operation, officers destroyed nearly 50 illegal furnaces used to manufacture firearms.
“While probing cases registered at Vimantal and Kalepadal police stations, we received several inputs pointing to illegal pistol-making units in Madhya Pradesh,” said Pune Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma. “Raids were conducted at multiple locations, arms units were demolished, and 36 suspects were taken into custody.”

So far, Pune Police have seized 21 pistols in the last three weeks. Interrogation of arrested suspects in the city highlighted a direct supply link from MP, leading to the massive operation.

“This is a full-fledged supply chain. We are still tracing those who sent the weapons to Pune. More people are likely involved, and the investigation is ongoing,” Sharma added.

A 105-member Pune Police team, led by DCP Somay Munde, participated in the inter-state action.
