Despite stringent Section 144 restrictions imposed by Pune police on nightlife establishments following a massive drug seizure, reports surfaced of a sizable youth gathering near Elrow Pub in Kalyani Nagar extending into early Sunday morning. Following the circulation of viral videos depicting the congregation, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar initiated an investigation into the incident, reiterating strict surveillance orders for pubs, restaurants, and hotels.

Senior Police Inspector of the area attributed the gathering to IT employees’ shift changes at Cerebrum IT Park, refuting its connection to pubs and restaurants. However, Kalyani Nagar residents contested this explanation, alleging routine violations of Section 144 restrictions in the area. The crackdown, prompted by a raid in Kurkumbh MIDC uncovering a clandestine drug manufacturing facility and seizing drugs worth ₹3,700 crore, aimed to disrupt the narcotics supply chain. Suspicions linger regarding the extensive use of these drugs at parties, including those hosted at pubs. Despite mandated closing times of 1:30 am, viral videos suggested the gathering near Elrow Pub persisted beyond 3 am, raising concerns about compliance and public safety.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Nilesh Chavan, Resident of Kalyani Nagar, said “Since the implementation of Section 144, the area has been peaceful for some days. However, recently, people have started gathering again at the chronic spots, especially during late hours, in D-Mart lane etc, flouting section 144. Interestingly, a police van was standing near Kumar Kriti society. Despite that, crowding, flouting Section 144 etc was going on in front of the police. So, this is very disappointing to see. Several of our citizens have complained about this to the Yerawada Police Station but I don’t think anything will happen.”

Aaditya Patil, Resident of Kalyani Nagar, said “The incessant noise and disruption caused by late-night partygoers violating Section 144 is unacceptable. It’s impossible to get a peaceful sleep with the constant shouting and blaring music from cars. The authorities need to crack down on this behaviour to maintain peace and sanity in our neighbourhood.”

Monica S, Resident of Kalyani Nagar, said “As a resident of Kalyani Nagar, it’s disheartening to witness the resurgence of chaos in Dmart Lane despite the imposition of Section 144. The sight of police vehicles standing idle in the midst of the commotion only adds to our frustration. The incessant honking and disruption have become a constant source of annoyance for us. We distinctly remember the positive impact when CRPC 144 was enforced, restoring order and tranquillity to our neighbourhood. However, it’s evident that complacency has set in, and the rule of law is being flouted. It’s high time for Yerawada Police to take decisive action and eliminate this nuisance once and for all. Our community deserves to live in peace, and it’s imperative that strict measures are implemented to ensure that law and order prevail.”

Kalyani Nagar residents further say that in the early morning of March 3rd, 2024, at around 3:00 AM, a large crowd gathered in the Dmart lane of Kalyani Nagar. This crowd not only causes inconvenience and nuisance to the residents but also contributes to continuous honking, disrupting the peace of the neighbourhood.

A resident complained that even after implementing Section 144 in the area, the people continue to flock to the residential zones. People have lost civic sense. The IT companies must ensure that their employees are not a hindrance to the local citizens. Police patrolling in the area and action on those flouting norms must be strictly implemented for the betterment of the citizens.
