Pune Police Identify 2,576 Crime Hotspots, Boost Patrolling Under Cop24 Initiative
Pune police have identified 2,576 crime hotspots across the city, with most falling under Zone V and Zone III police station areas. To curb crime, the police have intensified patrolling under the Cop24 initiative, covering these hotspots five times a day.
According to the Hindustan Times, the Cop24 initiative, launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to strengthen law enforcement and reduce police response time. The system is centrally managed by the crime branch, ensuring coordinated deployment of personnel. It uses technology, data analysis, and real-time monitoring to enhance public safety, especially in high-crime areas.
As part of this effort, the crime branch has compiled data on 30,000 criminals in the city. This information, including residential details, past offenses, and recent cases, has been uploaded to the MySafe Crime Module app. Beat patrol officers are required to update an accused’s whereabouts regularly and make digital entries.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that the combination of technology and traditional policing has led to a decline in street crimes, murders, and attempted murders. “More than 2,500 crime hotspots have been mapped, and a dossier of 30,000 criminals has been updated for swift action,” he said.
The police have set a target to reduce murder-related crimes by over six per cent compared to the previous year through crime hotspot mapping. The commissioner also confirmed that officers have achieved a 100 per cent rate of visiting these hotspots five times daily.
The police administration is now working on strategies to address patrolling challenges in red zone areas, where crime hotspots were identified during the survey.
