Pune: The Crime Branch of the Pune Police has refuted the rumour that realtors or property owners need a police permit to rent out properties. This has deterred people from sharing details about their tenants. The police clarified that they have not issued any directives in this case.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime-1), Sunil Tambe, explained that the directive says property owners should inform the police about their tenants for credential verification. Failure to comply with this requirement could result in prosecution under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

Tambe made this statement while delivering a lecture at a large gathering organized by the police in collaboration with the Bandu Bhau Bhaichara Foundation, an NGO, at the New Grace English School in Kondhwa.

As per the information received, Tambe urged property owners to visit the Pune police website and click on a link to upload information about their tenants. Additionally, he requested assistance from the housing society’s chairman and secretary to maintain individual records of the properties. Tambe cited instances such as bomb blasts in Pune and Mumbai, where the involvement of terror suspects seeking shelter in the state was discovered due to property owners holding tenant details.

As per the information received, Tambe advised property owners to go to the Pune police’s website and click on the link to upload details about their tenants. He also asked the housing society’s chairman and secretary to keep and maintain records. Tambe informed that terror suspect cases seeking shelter in Pune and Mumbai increased when owners didn’t share tenant details.
