Pune Police to Take Over Smart City’s Traffic Management System

The Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), implemented under Pune’s Smart City initiative to ease congestion, will soon be handed over to the Pune Police. The decision comes as the Smart City project nears its end, following months of discussions between the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Police, and Smart City officials.

During a District Planning Committee meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar directed that the PMC-owned traffic signal system be transferred to the Police Commissionerate for better management. Officers and staff currently working under the Smart City traffic system will also move to the Pune Police.

What is ATMS?

  • A state-of-the-art signal system installed at 124 intersections across Pune.
  • Adjusts signal timings dynamically based on traffic flow and vehicle density.
  • Aims to ensure smoother movement on city roads.

Cost and Maintenance:

  • Project cost: Rs102 crore.
  • Annual maintenance Rs11 crore, to be borne by PMC.

In addition to the ATMS, Pune has 123 more traffic signals, which PMC manages separately. The involvement of multiple agencies Smart City, PMC, and Traffic Police has caused coordination issues, preventing the system from functioning effectively.

To streamline operations and ensure better traffic management, complete control of traffic signals will now be handed over to the Pune Police. Authorities believe this will improve efficiency and reduce congestion across the city.
