Pune: Power Supply To 7,122 MSEDCL Consumers Cut As ₹319.5 Crore Dues Pile Up
Pune, March 13, 2026: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (Mahavitaran) has intensified its recovery drive in the Pune circle against consumers who have failed to clear their electricity bills despite repeated reminders. The power utility has urged residents to clear pending dues promptly, especially as several festivals such as Gudi Padwa, Eid al-Fitr and Rama Navami fall in March.
According to Mahavitaran, outstanding electricity dues in the Pune circle have reached ₹319.5 crore, owed by 5,51,598 consumers. As part of a special recovery campaign ahead of the financial year-end, the utility has begun disconnecting power supply to defaulting consumers.
Between March 1 and March 9, 2026, electricity connections of 7,122 consumers were disconnected. Of these, 1,725 were permanent disconnections, while 5,397 were temporary suspensions due to unpaid bills.
Officials said the aggressive recovery drive aims to bring down arrears before the end of March. Special teams have been formed across divisions to speed up action against defaulters. Authorities added that disconnections are carried out as a last resort, but in many instances the process has led to disputes with consumers. Once supply is cut, customers are required to pay additional reconnection charges.
The dues are spread across several categories. Domestic consumers account for ₹74.81 crore across 4,64,302 connections, while commercial users owe ₹31.53 crore. Industrial consumers have pending dues of ₹18.36 crore. In addition, public lighting services owe ₹96.14 crore, public water supply systems ₹87.5 crore, and other public services about ₹11.13 crore.
Mahavitaran officials also reported incidents of threats and verbal abuse against staff during recovery visits. In one case, a branch engineer lodged a complaint at Khadak Police Station after allegedly being threatened by a consumer during a meter inspection. In another incident in Kondhwa, a senior technician filed a complaint at Kondhwa Police Station following a similar confrontation.
The power utility has appealed to consumers to avoid inconvenience by paying their electricity bills on time. Customers can receive a 1% rebate for online payments and additional prompt payment discounts. Bills can be paid through the Mahavitaran mobile app, the official website, or UPI platforms such as PhonePe, Google Pay and BHIM.
Chief Engineer Sunil Kakade of the Pune circle urged consumers to clear both current bills and outstanding dues at the earliest to avoid disconnection and help the utility maintain uninterrupted power supply.
