Pune: Former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that programming in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is possible. Advanced nations do not use EVMs for elections, yet India insists on conducting elections using them. This has raised doubts about the election process and its results among the public. Chavan urged the Central Election Commission and the government to address these concerns to uphold democracy in India.

Chavan was speaking during the inauguration of the “Service, Duty, and Sacrifice Week,” organized to commemorate the birthday of former Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Senior Congress leaders, including Ulhas Pawar, Ramesh Bagwe, and Ravi Ghangekar, were present at the event held at the Padamji Hall of the Maratha Chamber of Commerce on Tilak Road.

Chavan highlighted the significant threats to democracy in the country, calling upon the government to ensure public trust in the electoral process. He praised Sonia Gandhi’s sacrifice in declining the Prime Minister’s post despite her leadership in Congress’s victory in 2004, citing her visionary policies like the Right to Information, Food Security Act, and MGNREGA.

Other leaders, including Ulhas Pawar, spoke about Sonia Gandhi’s commitment to Indian culture and her enduring service to the nation following the demise of Rajiv Gandhi. Mohan Joshi, who has led this event for 20 years, emphasized Congress’s readiness to face future challenges despite concerns about democracy’s stability.
