Pune: The Pune Railway administration is preparing to carry out a thorough cleaning and polishing of the century-old Pune Railway Station’s heritage building using the ‘Sand Blasting method’.

Stains and grime will be eliminated to restore the front facade of the heritage structure to its original glory.Speaking to Pune Pulse, Dr Ramdas Bhise, Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) and PRO, Pune Railways said, “Pune railway station building is a heritage building constructed of stone masonry which requires a special type of cleaning method called sandblasting.

It is the process of smoothing and cleaning a hard surface by forcing solid particles, mainly sand on that surface at high speeds using compressed air. Once it is done the building will look new again. This process will take around 2 months to complete.

The sandblasting is mainly done during night hours as the movement of the public is minimal.” As per further information, Pune Railway Station’s main building is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The Pune Railway Station began operations in 1858 & rebuilt on July 27, 1925. The building is one-storey and the main entrance is located in the middle of the building.

Platform number 1 is located within the heritage building whereas the other six platforms are newly constructed. Pune railway station handles over 250 train operations daily and almost 2 lakh passengers pass through the station every day.
