Pune Records Season’s Lowest Temperature: Cold Wave Tightens Grip On Maharashtra As Nashik Drops To 5.6°C
Icy winds from the north push temperatures down across multiple districts, with several Pune regions falling below 10°C.
A sharp cold wave has swept across Maharashtra, bringing the season’s lowest temperatures to many parts of the state. Nashik recorded a biting 5.6 degrees Celsius in Niphad taluka, while Pune continued to shiver with back-to-back sub-10°C readings for the third consecutive day. Meteorologists say the sudden temperature dip is the result of steady cold winds blowing in from northern India.

In Nashik, Thursday night and early Friday morning saw temperatures sliding further, with the city area itself settling at 7.8 degrees Celsius. While the chill is known to benefit crops like grapes and onions at certain stages, agriculture experts have raised concerns over potential damage to vineyards due to the cold, moisture-heavy winds. There is also fear of fungal infections such as brown rot and powdery mildew if temperatures keep falling.
Pune district too witnessed a steep fall. Several pockets recorded the coldest morning of the season, with Lavale at 16.0°C, Magarpatta at 15.6°C, Wadgaonsheri at 15.3°C, and Nimgiri dipping to 11.2°C. Suburbs and semi-rural belts felt the chill even more intensely, with Kurvande registering 10.3°C and Ambegaon touching 10°C. Some regions on the outskirts saw temperatures hovering close to single digits through the night.
The chill has been building since early December, after a brief period of stable temperatures last month. Pune’s minimum temperature dropped to 8.4°C on Wednesday, 7.9°C on Thursday and 8.3°C on Friday, giving residents a continuous spell of wintry mornings. Clear skies and dry air have intensified the cold, especially before sunrise when winds pick up speed.

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that the overall temperature pattern will remain broadly stable over the next two days. Pune’s minimum temperature is expected to rise slightly to around 9°C on Saturday, while the maximum may touch 29°C. Light, scattered fog during early morning hours is also likely across parts of the state. A marginal increase in temperatures may be felt from Monday onwards, with daytime readings touching 30°C and nighttime temperatures settling around 10°C.
For now, winter is at its peak in Maharashtra, and both Nashik and Pune are experiencing the strongest cold wave of the season. Residents have been advised to take adequate precautions against the sudden temperature drop, particularly in areas where winds remain strong and humidity stays low.
