Pune Registers 555 Imported Vehicles In 2024, Marking A 79% Rise from Last Year

The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) registered 555 imported vehicles in the first 11 months of 2024, including 300 two-wheelers and 255 luxury cars, agricultural vehicles, and other four-wheelers. This marks a sharp increase from 309 imported vehicle registrations in 2023, bringing substantial revenue to the RTO.
Pune typically witnesses registrations of 2.5 to 3 lakh vehicles annually, with the city’s total vehicle count now exceeding 35 lakh. While two-wheelers dominate registrations, the RTO has noted a gradual decline in daily registrations over the years. In 2023, 160 of the 309 imported vehicles registered were two-wheelers, while 149 were four-wheelers.
Owners of imported vehicles are required to pay 20% of the vehicle’s market price as service charges, in addition to fees for special registration numbers. These charges contribute significantly to government revenue.
Pune RTO highlighted the growing preference for imported two-wheelers over four-wheelers this year. “This trend has bolstered government revenue substantially.”
Registering imported vehicles involves adherence to regulations set by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Requirements include right-hand drive compatibility, speedometers calibrated for Indian units, and compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The cost of registering imported vehicles is substantial. Two-wheelers incur a registration fee of ₹3,000, while four-wheelers require ₹5,000. Import taxes, often around ₹20 lakh, further add to the cost. Many imported cars are registered directly at showrooms, simplifying the process for buyers.
With the rising trend in imported vehicle registrations, Pune RTO officials expect this segment to continue contributing robustly to the city’s revenue.
