Pune GBS Outbreak: A rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), has claimed its first life in Pune. The deceased, a young man from Dhayari, passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Solapur.
First Fatality Linked to GBS in Maharashtra
The youth, a resident of the DSK Vishwa area in Dhayari, Pune, was diagnosed with GBS a few days ago. He was initially admitted to a private hospital in Pune but later moved to Solapur for further treatment as his condition worsened. Despite showing some signs of recovery in the ICU, he succumbed to respiratory complications shortly after being discharged from intensive care.
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar Holds Emergency Meeting
Following the tragic death, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar convened a meeting with Pune municipal officials to address the growing GBS cases. Pawar announced that treatments for GBS patients are underway at two major hospitals in Pune. He also directed officials to conduct water sample testing to identify any potential sources of contamination linked to the outbreak.
Free Treatment and Financial Aid Announced for GBS Patients
In light of the increasing number of GBS cases, Pune Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale has implemented key measures:
- Free Treatment: Patients undergoing treatment at Pune’s Kamala Nehru Hospital will receive care at no cost.
- Financial Assistance: Patients treated at private hospitals under the “Urban Poor Scheme” will be eligible for financial aid of up to ₹2 lakh.
- Free Immunoglobulin Injections: The municipal corporation will provide essential immunoglobulin injections free of charge for patients at both private and government hospitals.

The rare syndrome, which affects the nervous system, has raised alarm in Pune, with several cases reported in recent weeks. Citizens are urged to stay vigilant, prioritize hygiene, and report any symptoms to healthcare providers promptly.
