Pune: Residents Of Pimple Saudagar Face Traffic Nightmare Due To Ongoing Road Work

The ongoing road widening and upgradation project in Pimple Saudagar has become a point of frustration for residents, particularly those with children attending schools in the area. “PCMC offers new challenge to Pimple Saudagar by starting work on Siddivinayak society to Govind garden hotel. No planning, one lane is blocked while the other lane has big state-of-the-art drainage manholes. The whole traffic, including students from GK Gurukul and Vybgyor School, is diverted, and no one is there to manage traffic at school times,” said resident Jitendra Chaudhary while speaking to the Pune Pulse.

Shatrughna Kate, a former corporator, mentioned that in response to the growing population in the Pimple Saudagar area, he had consistently followed up with the administration regarding the ongoing traffic congestion on Kunal Icon Road. He added that the municipal corporation has now taken a positive step to upgrade and modernize the road, addressing the concerns of the residents. “This work was already planned, and we are moving ahead with decent speed to complete this work. Although the project duration is 18 months, we are expecting it to get completed by a maximum of two years,” he said.

Ex-corporator Nana Kate stated that during school hours, maximum jams occur because two major big schools are in the same location. However, he noted that the schools have arranged for bouncers to manage the flow of traffic. “We will also be asking the contractor to bring some people to monitor traffic and reduce traffic jams and flow of traffic so that residents should not suffer. Although, for the betterment of the future and to resolve all the issues residents are facing now, it needs some cooperation from residents as well. So that we can get better road connectivity in the future,” he said.

The project, approved with an estimated budget of Rs 55 crore, aims to widen and modernize the 18-meter and 12-meter wide roads from Shivar Chowk to Govind Garden Chowk (Kunal Icon Road). The project will include provisions for pedestrian-friendly footpaths, planned parking spaces, and a drainage system to manage rainwater efficiently. The project, which is expected to commence by the end of September 2024 and be completed within 30 months, will help alleviate the heavy traffic congestion in this fast-growing residential and commercial area.
