Pune, July 21, 2024 – An elderly couple has been arrested in Pune for allegedly assaulting a woman traveling on a scooter with her two children, according to police. The road rage incident occurred on Saturday when Swapnil Kekre, frustrated by the lack of space to overtake, reportedly pulled the woman’s hair and punched her twice in the face, causing her nose to bleed.

The police registered a case against Swapnil Kekare and his wife, Shriya Kekare, both residents of Pune, after Jerlyn D’Silva, a digital content creator, posted a video detailing the attack.

D’Silva claimed she was traveling on the Pashan-Baner Link Road on a scooter with her two children when Kekre, driving behind them, was speeding for nearly two kilometers. She mentioned this in speaking with Pune Pulse Reporter.

According to D’Silva, she pulled her scooter to the side to let the car pass, but Kekre overtook her scooter and stopped in front of it. “He got out of the car very angrily, punched me twice, and pulled my hair. I had two kids with me, and he showed no concern for their safety. How safe is this city? Why are people behaving like maniacs?” D’Silva said in her video.

“I had two kids with me; anything could have happened. A woman helped me,” she added, visibly bleeding from her nose and mouth.

The couple faces charges under Sections 118(1), 74, 115(2), 352, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and Sections 119, 177, and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijayakumar Magar stated, “The case has been registered at Chaturshrungi Police Station, and further investigations are ongoing.”

D’Silva described suffering severe injuries to her nose and some internal bleeding from being struck multiple times. She has been discharged from the hospital after receiving initial treatment.
