Pune: Air-conditioned taxi drivers in Pune, India, are planning to go on strike on February 20th if ride-hailing companies Ola and Uber fail to implement the new government-approved fares.

The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) announced the revised fares in January, which increased the minimum charge for air-conditioned taxis (Cool Cabs) to Rs 37 for the first 1.5 kilometres, compared to Rs 31 for regular taxis. However, Ola and Uber are yet to update their apps to reflect the new fares, which has left the drivers feeling cheated.

Dr Keshav Kshirsagar, a spokesperson for the Indian Gig Workers Forum, said, “We gave them a month, but they haven’t implemented. So, we’ll protest and stop working until they follow the rules.”

The RTO says they’ve met with Ola and Uber to clarify the new fares, but the companies claim they need more information. The RTO also clarified that the increased fares only apply to basic hatchback cars, not sedans.

The situation highlights the ongoing tension between taxi drivers and ride-hailing companies in India. Drivers often complain about low fares and lack of regulation, while companies argue for flexibility and market-driven pricing.

With the strike looming, it remains to be seen if Ola and Uber will agree to the new fares or if the dispute will escalate further.

An Uber spokesperson on the strike by driver issue said, “Reports of our Pune operations being impacted from February 20 are categorically false. We are committed to keep the city moving and continue to provide seamless services for commuters intra and inter-city needs.”
