Pune RTO Enforces Mandatory Two-Helmet Rule for Every Motorcycle PurchaseÂ
In response to a significant rise in motorcycle accidents and fatalities, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has implemented a new directive requiring motorcycle dealerships to provide two helmets with every new motorcycle sold.
This initiative, introduced on January 3, 2025, aims to address the growing safety concerns for motorcyclists and their passengers. The RTO emphasizes that this measure is part of a larger campaign to improve road safety and reduce the alarming number of traffic-related fatalities in Pune.
Stricter Helmet Regulations Â
The Pune Traffic Police have also stepped up enforcement of helmet use across the city. In addition to leveraging CCTV cameras to penalize riders without helmets, ground-level checks have been intensified to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Alarming Statistics Highlight the Need for Action Â
Between January and October 2024, Pune reported 271 motorcycle accidents, resulting in 278 deaths. These figures underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures, prompting the state’s Additional Director General of Police for Traffic, Arvind Salve, to direct stricter enforcement of helmet use.
A Proactive Step Toward Safety Â
The RTO’s two-helmet mandate is viewed as a proactive step to protect both riders and pillion passengers. Authorities hope that providing helmets at the point of sale, coupled with stricter enforcement, will significantly reduce accidents and save lives.
With these measures, Pune aims to set an example for road safety and create a safer environment for all commuters.
