In a move to enhance commuter safety and enforce accountability, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has made it compulsory for all auto-rickshaw drivers in the city to wear a prescribed uniform—white shirt and khaki trousers—and display their identification cards while on duty.
According to a notice issued by Sub-Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale, strict action will be taken against violators under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The directive is part of a broader initiative to bring discipline and visibility to the public transport sector.
Despite being a legal requirement under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Act, the RTO has observed widespread non-compliance among drivers, prompting the latest enforcement push. Bhosale emphasized that any driver found operating without the specified uniform and ID will be penalized accordingly.

To ensure compliance, the RTO will be launching a special inspection drive across Pune. Dedicated teams will monitor auto-rickshaw drivers for adherence to uniform regulations, possession of ID cards, and valid documentation. Offenders will face legal consequences under the applicable rules.
The RTO has appealed to all auto-rickshaw drivers to follow the updated guidelines, emphasizing that the measure is designed to foster a safer and more organized commuting environment for passengers in Pune.
