Pune RTO takes action on school buses and vans amid child safety concerns
Amid growing concerns over child safety, the Pune RTO has taken action by initiating a comprehensive inspection of school transportation, responding to a recent incident that has raised alarms in the community.
This initiative, which took place on October 4, 2024, was designed to ensure adherence to safety regulations and safeguard students. Inspections were carried out in several key areas, including Vishrantwadi, Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar, Wagholi, Hadapsar, Lonikand, Saswad, Satara Road, Bibwewadi, Katraj, and Khadi Machine Chowk. Four squads were assigned to this operation, leading to the issuance of 117 memos to van drivers who violated RTO regulations. A total of ₹4,74,500 in penalties was imposed on the non-compliant school vans and buses.
RTO officer Archana Gaikwad stated that “the initiative not only concentrated on regular inspections but also highlighted important safety measures, such as ensuring proper seating arrangements and following load capacity limits.”
Deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosale verified that 18 schools were included in an awareness campaign aimed at female students who utilize school vans and buses. He emphasized, “This proactive step is essential to guarantee student safety, and any violations will result in severe penalties and additional measures. The inspection efforts will be ongoing periodically as part of the RTO’s dedication to upholding safety standards in school transportation.”
