Pune Shivers As Mercury Drops To 6.9°C, Coldest Night Of The Season So Far
Minimum temperatures plunge across several areas as winter tightens its grip on the city; IMD predicts stable weather for the next two days.
Pune experienced one of its coldest mornings this winter as the mercury dropped sharply, sending a chill across the city. The lowest minimum temperature recorded was 6.9 degrees Celsius in the National Defence Academy (NDA) area, marking the coldest pocket in Pune on Friday. Several other parts of the city also reported unusually low night temperatures, making residents bundle up against the biting cold.
According to weather data, the average minimum temperature for Pune stood at 8.4 degrees Celsius, showing a significant dip compared to earlier days. Over the last two days, the city has witnessed a steady decline in night temperatures, intensifying winter conditions.
The NDA area recorded the lowest temperature at 6.9°C, followed closely by Haveli at 6.9°C and Malin at 7.8°C. Other cold pockets included Pashan at 8.3°C, Shivajinagar at 8.4°C, Baramati at 9.2°C, Daund at 9.5°C, Talegaon at 9.8°C, Ambegaon at 10.0°C and Nimgiri at 10.7°C. Even traditionally warmer zones such as Hadapsar and Dapodi saw temperatures dip to 11.6°C and 11.9°C respectively.
Western and rural outskirts also reported chilly conditions. Girivan recorded 12.7°C, Bhor 12.4°C and Dudulgaon 12.2°C, indicating that the cold wave was widespread and not limited to urban zones alone.
Despite the sharp drop in minimum temperatures, the maximum temperature has remained stable at around 28 degrees Celsius, providing mild daytime relief. The contrast between warm afternoons and freezing early mornings is making the weather feel harsher for many Punekars.
The India Meteorological Department has stated that the weather is expected to remain stable for the next two days. No major fluctuations in temperature are predicted immediately, but cold nights are likely to continue, especially in low-lying and open areas.
Residents across Pune reported dense morning fog, numb fingers, and increased use of heaters and warm clothing. Early morning walkers, schoolchildren and two-wheeler riders were seen wrapped in woollens, scarves and mufflers as the cold intensified.
Health experts advise extra caution for senior citizens, children and those with respiratory problems, as sudden drops in temperature can trigger illnesses such as cold, cough, asthma and joint pain. Staying hydrated, wearing layered clothing and avoiding exposure to cold air early in the morning is being recommended.
With winter now firmly settling in, the city is likely to witness more chilly mornings in the coming days. While many enjoy the seasonal cold, it serves as a reminder to stay warm and take necessary precautions, especially during early hours.
