Pune: A shocking incident unfolded late Sunday night near Pune Railway Station when a man attempted to vandalise the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The man, dressed in a saffron kurta and armed with a sharp sickle, climbed onto the pedestal of the statue and struck it multiple times.

The act caused brief tension in the busy station area as bystanders quickly alerted the railway police. Responding swiftly, police intervened and apprehended the accused before he could inflict further damage.

The arrested individual has been identified as Suraj Shukla, a native of Uttar Pradesh who had been staying in Pune for the past few days while seeking employment. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the act and probing whether Shukla has any links to extremist organisations.

Police officials confirmed that Gandhi’s statue was not significantly damaged due to timely action by citizens and law enforcement.

The incident has raised serious concerns about security arrangements at public spaces, especially at sites of national importance. Police have also ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the accused to determine if the act was premeditated or a result of mental instability.

Legal proceedings against Shukla have begun, and he will be produced in court soon. The attack has sparked outrage among locals, with many demanding enhanced security measures around prominent statues and monuments in the city.
