With vigilance, determination and a zeal for the environment the SNBP school orchestrated an activity for water conservation with the help of its students. A lot of student volunteers from classes 8th and 9th turned up to partake in the activity.

As part of the activity students were educated on how to install water aerators on taps to regulate the speed and flow of water. The demonstration of how to install these aerators was done by the school plumber, and after learning about the process, the students were directed to go to flats in the neighbouring Roseland Residency and with due permission of the residents, install aerators on their taps.

Jayshree Venkatraman, principal at SNBP International School’s Rahatani branch, expressed her valour for the student’s efforts and stressed on the significance of learning these practical skills, especially during times when water resources are depleting rapidly and big cities like Bengaluru and Pune are constantly grappling with water cuts and shortages.

Giving an overview of the activity, she said, “The aerators were supplied to us by the rotary club and so instead of just donating them we thought we would train our students on how to insert the aerators inside the taps. We had the school plumber explaining the process to the students with a demonstration. Having learnt how to insert these aerators, they (students) went to every house in Roseland Residency and offered to change the taps.”

Babita Banerjee, one of the teachers at the school and supervisors of the activity, delved into its details and said, “Around 20-30 households were covered by the children, and the remaining aerators were distributed by them among the residents. Students worked in pairs of two along with one teacher with every pair to oversee them. They started at around 10:45 in the morning and by 12 they were able to install.”

Roseland Residency, one of the most esteemed housing societies in the city, has been facing water shortages for quite some time and has had to purchase water in large quantities on a daily basis. Highlighting the current situation, a Roseland Residency resident, Chandan Chourasiya, said, “Our society has been grappling with water issues for a while and our own residents have been taking measures to save water. The initiative taken by the school is an eye-opener for everyone.”

Elucidating on water issues, SNBP has faced, Principal Venkatraman explained how even though the students do not have to directly face any shortages of water, the school has had to purchase tankers every once in a while. Therefore, she emphasised on the need for everyone, especially students to learn these employable skills and said, “An alarm that has to be raised and sufficiently so for this young generation to know that future maybe bleaker than what it is today, therefore, I need to train them to ensure they’re sufficiently oriented to this particular skill, which is plumbing.”
