In a significant move, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has announced that candidates pursuing a second PhD in a different subject will be exempted from submitting coursework and research publications. This exemption will come into effect from next year.

According to university officials, candidates who have already received a PhD and are pursuing another in a different subject can directly proceed to thesis and viva once their topics are approved. This decision aims to provide relief to candidates who have already demonstrated their research capabilities.

The SPPU recently invited online applications for PhD admissions from candidates who had cleared the National Eligibility Test and appeared for the university’s PhD entrance test.

Registrar of SPPU, Munjaji Rasve, stated to the media person that, “We have informed all affiliated colleges and departments that candidates pursuing a second PhD in a different subject will enjoy relaxations in submissions. Coursework and research publication will be exempted for these candidates from next year.”

As per the university’s existing rules, first-time PhD students are required to pass coursework approved by the academic council with a minimum of 55% marks or its equivalent grade within the initial two years.
