Pune, September 6, 2025 — A new study published in the Journal of Diabetes Research has revealed that structured lifestyle modifications can help nearly half of prediabetic Indians achieve remission, offering fresh hope in the fight against diabetes.

The research was conducted by a team of doctors in Pune. It analysed data from 427 prediabetic patients, aged 18–75, enrolled in a one-year integrated lifestyle intervention (ILI) programme between March 2020 and May 2023 across 89 Indian cities.

Participants, with HbA1C levels between 5.7% and 6.4% and not on insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents, followed a regimen combining a personalised plant-based diet, regular physical activity, psychological counselling, and medical monitoring.

Results showed that 47.1% of patients achieved prediabetes remission. Significant improvements were observed in HbA1c, BMI, fasting glucose, insulin resistance, lipid profiles, and blood pressure. Notably, 34% of patients lost over 10% of body weight, with women recording greater reductions in weight and BMI compared to men.

Prediabetes is a growing concern in India, with a prevalence of around 15%. But it also provides a crucial window for lifestyle correction.

The findings underscore the potential of a tailored, multidisciplinary approach in preventing progression from prediabetes to diabetes, offering a practical and sustainable health strategy for India’s rising at-risk population.
