With the Swargate Metro station set to open soon, commuters and auto rickshaw drivers are urging authorities to address potential traffic chaos at Jedhe Chowk. The upcoming Metro station, situated at Jedhe Chowk, is anticipated to significantly increase foot traffic in the Swargate area.
Commuters have voiced concerns about the lack of coordination between PMPML, MSRTC, and auto rickshaw services. They point out that stalls are occupying the entire boundary of the new Metro station, while auto rickshaws congest the road stretches around the MSRTC bus terminus and PMPML bus stops. This has led to complaints about haphazard parking and traffic congestion.
Maha Metro officials have acknowledged these issues and are working on solutions. They plan to shift PMPML bus stops following the completion of the Metro station. Additionally, two new road links are expected to help alleviate congestion around Jedhe Chowk. The Metro station will have four to five entry-exit points, with immediate access from Satara Road (Jedhe Chowk) and additional points at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch and MSRTC bus terminus in later phases.
Auto rickshaw drivers have highlighted the lack of dedicated parking space, which exacerbates traffic problems. Commuters have also raised concerns about the difficulty of crossing Satara Road to reach the MSRTC bus terminus.
Maha Metro aims to start services to Swargate in the coming weeks, with stations at Swargate, Mandal, and Kasba Peth slated for opening.
An autorickshaw union member had raised the issue of allotting a specific space around Metro stations dedicated to the autos so that congestion can be curbed and also first and last mile connectivity can be provided to the passengers using metro service smoothly.
