City Corporation to push ahead with land acquisition to ease chronic congestion and open 500 km of unused roads

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has long sought to ease traffic congestion by building flyovers, widening roads, and creating new thoroughfares. But with rapid urbanization and the steady rise in vehicle numbers, these measures have proved insufficient, leaving many major roads choked on a daily basis.

To address the problem, PMC has drafted a plan to connect “missing links” in the city’s road network. Since voluntary land acquisition has received little cooperation from property owners, the road department will now proceed with compulsory land acquisition.

A 2022 traffic study conducted with MIT College students identified over 700 locations where incomplete links have stalled road projects. Inspections of both the city and recently incorporated villages, using development (DP) and regional (RP) plans, found that 520 km of roads remain fragmented and unused. Completing the missing links could unlock approximately 500 km of road for public use.

The acquisition drive will focus on key areas across the city, including Kothrud, Karvenagar, Warje, Baner, Pashan, Kondhwa, Nagar Road–Airport–Kharadi, Mundhwa–Hadapsar, Sinhgad Road, and Satara Road, with several important connector routes earmarked for development.
